                             BLOSSOM FORTH
                             =============

A Forth virtual machine that is sustainable and portable. Eventually
it will support the Forth 83 standard.

It can be compiled with a K&R C, C89, or C99 compiler. The standard C
library is optional on the following systems:

  Linux ARM
  Linux i386
  NetBSD ARM
  NetBSD i386

C compilers tested: BCC (Minix i86), TCC (Linux i386, Linux ARM), GCC
(Linux i386, NetBSD i386, Linux ARM, NetBSD ARM), PCC (NetBSD i386).

Linkers tested: GLD (Linux i386, NetBSD i386, Linux ARM, NetBSD ARM),
TCC (Linux i386, Linux ARM).

Shells tested: Minix SH, NetBSD SH, DASH.

BUILDING -
--------
To build this program with the default Standard C library you need only
a C compiler and linker. Here is an example for the UNIX front end:

  cc -o blossom fe_unix.c forth.c

On some UNIX-like systems you can optionally assemble and link libsub
instead of linking libc. This will probably make the executable much
smaller and faster. Here is an example for Linux:

  cc -nostdlib -nostdinc -I /usr/include/libsub -o blossom \
    /usr/lib/start.o fe_unix.c forth.c /usr/lib/libsub.a

If you have the Bourne shell and Make-tools installed, you can
optionally use the build script 'make.sh'. This will compile and run
only what is necessary. It can be configured with a file named '.env'.
By default it will link libsub instead of libc if it's supported.

NOTES -
-----
BCC is an incomplete and faulty K&R C compiler. So while it may always
compile successfully, the executable might have incorrect instructions.
